Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones. It includes subjects such as geology, mineralogy, chemistry, crystallography, physics, optics and metallography. A gemologist studies the formation, occurrence, and the properties of gemstones in order to determine whether the stone is a natural, synthetic, treated or imitation.

Polished Diamond Grading

During this course students will learn how to evaluate the parameters that determine the quality of a polished diamond according to the rules of the International Diamond Council (IDC). Polished diamond parameters are known as the 4 C's -Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut. This programme is mainly a practical one with plenty of hands-on experience. Students would examine several diamonds, with both the loupe and microscope. They would also learn how to evaluate the quality of a polished diamond, and identity diamond imitations.

Rough Diamond Sorting and Evaluation

Although there is a lot of information on polished diamond grading, there still seems to be a veil of mystery surrounding the rough diamond trade . As Dubai's diamond market is growing, more professionals are required in this field. This course offers students an in-depth journey into the world of rough diamond mining, trading, sorting and evaluation.

Gold and Precious Metals

About gold, students will learn its mining, refining, testing and trading. Other precious metals such as silver, rhodium, iridium and platinum would also be discussed. The course includes identification of various precious metals and how to test their purity. A demonstration at the ARY gold testing lab is included.

Coloured Gemstone Identification

Coloured gemstones are popular in jewellery. The present trend indicates that more and more people are starting to buy gemstones in jewellery or as an investment. There are hundreds of different gemstones available in the market, and studies have shown that most people are not aware of the existence of synthetics and imitations. In this programme, students will learn how to identify whether the gemstone is a natural, synthetic or stimulant, and whether it has been treated to enhance its appearance.

Pearl Sorting and Evaluation

The Gulf used to be world famous for its fantastic natural pearls and they still play an important role in jewellery from this region. This course teaches how to separate natural from cultured pearls and salt water from fresh water pearls. Also included is identification of pearl treatments and imitations, sorting of pearls, evaluation of pearls and even how to make pearl strings.
